Interested in joining Tatak Ng Apat Na Alon Tribe or Getting a Tattoo?

TATAK NG APAT NA ALON (Mark of The Four Wave) ) is a contemporary tribe that focuses on reviving our past. A past that colonization has tried with every effort to take away from us. Our intentions are aimed toward rekindling our tradition and fanning the flame for the next generations to see. Above are some photos of tribe members who have actualized their family’s story as beautiful traditional tattoo markings across their bodies. Each and every line, shape, and symbol have intention and significance.

We are in a crucial time of educating ourselves on a deeper level about our past and ancestral lineage, to find pride in our culture and to once again feel comfortable in our skin. It is vital for the survival of Filipino people that we wake up, RISE UP and protect our disappearing culture. The colonizer called our poetic beliefs and traditions, savage and paganistic. They called us barbarians, yet they were the ones who conquered under the flag of Catholicism, eradicating ancient beliefs by forcing their religion on our people… that’s pretty barbaric and savage if you ask us. Our ancestors fought hard for Filipinos today to be proud of where they come from and what our individual island culture is about. Look at what is happening in the Philippines, and to all indigenous populations around the world, we are almost completely assimilated to the lack of culture in the western world. It is shameful to our ancestors who challenged this mentality and drew blood for what they believed in.

What do you say when someone asks, what does it mean to be Filipino?
This tribe is focused on restoring our beliefs, creating a proud perspective and breathing life into what it really means to be Filipino – who we were before acclimating to a forced religion and way of life. Reviving tattoos is just the beginning of a long mission to uncover the eyes of Filipinos. Tattoos are a part of your culture, embedded in the beliefs, and they are a right of passage that must be maintained.

This is why Tatak Ng Apat Na Alon is dedicated to reviving traditional tattoo arts of the Philippine Islands. From the Big Island of LUZON and its proud Igrot tattoo traditions, to the VISAYAN islands, which the Spaniards called “La Isla De Los Pintados” (Island of The Painted Ones). They referred to the people as “Pintados” because the were covered in tattoos from head to toe. Over on the MINDANAO island, the traditional patterns found on their textiles gives a glimpse to the regions native myths, folklore and legends that were used as the subject of their tattoo traditions. Throughout the Philippines, our people were blessed with these beautiful adornments and give us a distinct definition of who we were as a nation of tribally diverse islands.

Remember! A people without knowledge of their past, origins and culture is like a tree without roots. Our ancient traditions and our ancestors are the roots to the tree of life. The great battles and revolutions of the Philippines became the large strong tree trunk, standing proud and unwavering! As the tree branches out it tells the stories of our grandparents and the leaves hold the spirits of our parents. From the bottom to the top, we all support each other as we grow and reach higher. Only together can we work toward seeing the light of day and feeling the warmth of the sun.

Sadly, in Filipino communities today, many parents have allowed their leaves to become withered and fall off the tree of our culture. They do a great disservice by not teaching the youth about what it means to be Filipino and to have such a beautifully diverse culture. It is now our responsibility to research, to study, and to learn about our past. We must eagerly seek the wisdom and knowledge held in the roots, the trunk, the branches and the leaves. After all, we are the fruit! Within this fruit and within our passion of learning our heritage, is THE SEED. We must sow this seed, helping new trees grow healthy and resilient, filled with consciousness and open to understanding the true identity of our race. FILIPINO AND PROUD, The Mark of the Four Waves! So please, if you are reading this, water the seedlings within you and watch our pride grow as we bridge the gap between our ancestors and the next generations, from the roots, to the seeds. Today, we work towards this as we revive the lost traditional tattooing arts of the ancient Philippines.
